Edwards penned this Christocentric sermon within the framework of the covenant of redemption, focusing on one of the inward motivations for Christ&#39;s sufferings. Christ has so set his love upon men, Edwards comments, that the seeing this sight [of men saved] is what he earnestly desired and greatly delights in. For example take that of a business man. When this now president of the company first began his journey in the working world he did not start as president but at the bottom of the corporate ladder. Although he started at the bottom of the corporate ladder yet this was not his original goal or intention; rather, being president was. See, what he originally intended was accomplished last in order, while starting at the bottom, which was intended after his goal of president was chosen, was accomplished first in order. Ecclesiastes 7:8, &ldquo;The end of a thing is better than its beginning.&rdquo; And so God who is infinite in wisdom has His end goal as His original intention, but starts out with something different, and continues to take a series of steps until His original goal is accomplished. At this point people will try, understandably, to quote scripture to show how this is not true, but I personally like to show how this position is self-refuting and so it is not necessarily needed to go to the scriptures. A position that self-refutes itself is false, and so as a worldview it does not exist, and so it stands as no threat in anyway to the Biblical Worldview.
