Exodus 34:5, “And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. (6) And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,”
Here God passes by Moses and Proclaims His Name. What we see are two Glorious truths. First Gods Sovereignty and His Supremacy is seen in the words “The LORD, The LORD God.” Notice God repeats His Name twice, this is very important for us, the Hebrew langue emphasizes a words importance by repeating it. God wants us to know HE is LORD over all. He is God and has complete LORDSHIP over everything.
Then second Gods Mercy is seen in “merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.” I will also like to point out a third point which I will not be covering in extent of this book due to time but would at least like to mention it. This comes from the word “truth.” Oh what hope and peace the believer gets to have knowing, that with perfect wisdom and knowledge God will execute His Grace and Mercy through His complete power and control. God has all the truth and wisdom and counsel to make sure His promises. That He will work for good everything in the believes life. To know God as absolute “Truth” is hope, true “Hope.”
God is Glorious because He is kind with this Sovereignty. God is Glorious because He is merciful, loving and gracious with His complete and absolute control over everything, and orchestrating them in perfect harmony and wisdom.
When I say Mercy and Sovereignty I am using them as general terms. For example when I say mercy you may also include love, kindness, grace, and so on. When I say Sovereignty you may include as well Gods Supremacy, power, Wisdom and so on. One goal I have for saying Mercy and Sovereignty is to help people see the bible through a focused lens. Since I know trying to understand the bible is at times hard to understand and we can definitely make the statement “Sovereignty and mercy” very deep. So if looking at God sometimes makes your eyes of your brain cross due to the depth of who He is then that is a good thing and we should be there quite often. But to help this out it is also good to see God the way He told us in Exodus 33, which simply says He is Sovereign and Merciful. He rules all heaven, earth, people, angles, kingdoms, powers, events, choices, desires everything seen or unseen with love, kindness, grace, compassion. His scepter is a scepter of might and His hands are silken giving a touch of love to the weariest of sinners hoping to find mercy in Jesus Christ.
