 - Discovering afresh the grander and simplicity of forgiveness -

This morning I started off the day with a struggle of a sinful mind. Immediately my soul fail into a spiritual shamefulness, anger and depression which comes from feeling the guilt of my sin. Yet God’s grace was still working in my heart and I, by the grace of God, instead of shutting my mind away from God as I have done in the past, due to shame and hopelessness, I instead diligently began to fight to rest on the grace given to me only in Jesus Christ. I listened to a message by John Piper and read a sermon by that great preacher Charles Spurgeon, called “Justice Satisfied”. In this wonderful message the Lord illuminated a truth to my heart and mind, it was like a refreshing spring found in the middle of a desert.

“[Christ] has now become the sinners advocate, and itself with its mighty voice pleads with God, that whosoever confesses his sin should be pardoned and be cleansed from all unrighteousness. From these words the precious Holy Spirit showed to me how little the sinner does to find forgiveness. All we do is this; be willing to repent and confess our sins. If we do, the promise from the Almighty God Himself is that we would be eternally forgiven. (1 John 1:9)

If one truly feels the weight of their sin against the backdrop of God's Holiness and His demand for perfect Justice and feels the horribleness and shamefulness of his sin, then to find that if we only but confess our sins we are then totally and all together eternally forgiven and cleansed of all our sin, it cause ones heart to be filled with wonder and aw of the Lord God.

Then it is stunning, to this kind of person, to realize forgiveness is given us at no price, no thanks to us! We but only repent and confess and suddenly we who only moments before were sure of our punishment and doomed fate, as we felt our sin was exposed in the Light of the ever watchful eyes of the God of perfect purity, now find ourselves covered with refreshing waves of the sweet Holy Spirit whispering the truths of the Gospel to the utter most parts of our hearts. When only a short time before, this same heart was indulged in lust and pride. How can this be? What kind Grace this is. What kind of Mercy are we dealing with here? Far to grand and deep for his man to grasp.

So God in a moment of time flooded my heart with the wonder and pleasure of knowing how little or how nothing I do to find forgiveness. This brought me to the point of meditating on the Glories of Christ and the depths of His infinite Worth.  What suffering to have bought such a Grand salvation to sinners such as me. What an infinite Gift Christ purchased for His saints and church. I believe this is what the Old Testament prophet meant when he wrote the words, “Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.”(Isaiah 55:1) Truly the depths of the Worth, Wisdom, and Grace of our Heavenly Father are uncomprehendable. Thanks be to God, for His Mercy found me in the darkness, and now has brought me to the warmth of His light.

“Lord, forgive me for my sin. Forgive me for not knowing and trusting in your Mercy as I ought. Forgive me for thinking I can add to your salvation and work for my forgiveness.  Have mercy on me for I am a sinner. For I know with You I am washed as white as the snow. Thank you for the sufferings you gave and the price at which it cost You. So teach my heart Your ways, Your grace, Your Gospel. Cause this heart of mine to solely rest on You for all my Forgiveness and everything I need. You are my portion and my favorite thought. Draw close to me for I desire to be Close to You. For your heart is where my home is. To the Father of Glory and the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit be all praise and thanks for all time. Amen.”
