Answering one of the questions of philosophy.

John 14:6,  Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

What is being, doing and knowing?

Answer - Jesus is the life, way and truth!

Now I will answer in more detail what is being. I will do this from the foundation of scripture and its answers. For if God is the author of all things then He would best know what and why He made all things. Scripture therefore is where we will start. Christ Jesus is the “life”. Now I do understand there are more to the foundations of philosophy than the 3 basics, but for the issue at hand I am reaching for the simplicity.  I will in the future, if the Lord wills, be answering more foundational philosophy questions.

Being (what is being, what does it mean to be)

            Jesus is the “life”(John 14:6, “I am the…life”)

1 Corinthians 8:6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whgodom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we (live)exist through Him.

  1. God is the absolute original creator and therefore defines what is being. Or defines what it means for a His creatures to be.  If something exist or is being it is because God willed it. Therefore from the pervious argument of “knowing” I now come to the conclusion that if one does not live for God and God’s value and or what God decrees is valuable and delight in Him above all things in life then that creature is not “being”, in the most real since. Or as scripture puts the creature dose not have life. Now there is a being that is not a being in a since a person dose not value God above all. Or in other words does not fulfill his or hers good purpose for which the creator wants. Which is Life, knowing God is life. John 17:3 "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” And also in John 17:24 "Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may behold My glory which You have given Me...” And again in Ephesians 2:7,” so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Jesus Christ” And in Isaiah 43:7, “everyone…whom I have created for My Glory…” Now God is life and is of such value that we must not be labeled as having life until we know and enjoy God as such. For in John we just learned that Life is “Knowing you the only true God.” God is the only Original Great being and will always be so. He is the only TURE God and therefore life is summed up in Him. To say you have life without knowing God is vain, wrong and meaningless. This is true because the reality of knowing God is so pleasurable compared to not knowing God that God has made it clear these kind of people are not worthy to be called alive. It needs to be noted here it is oblivious the greatness of God grander and His reality is far superior than what our little minds have or can comprehend. That is why we are here now discussing things as this, knowing how hard it is for us to truly know God’s reality, thus we need to ponder about this much. For small creatures such as ourselves being immersed by an endlessly grand and stunning universe, then to look in the mirror and say they have life without regard to their maker is sad at least.  We were created for God’s Glory. All of creation is for this same purpose. Psalms 19:1,”The heaven declare the Glory of God.” Every thing that’s been created is pointed and brought into existence for this purpose. All created things will always have at least one thing in common or related to one another in this way. To communicate the Fullness of God’s Goodness and infinite perfections, “for His Glory”. God says in Romans 9:23 that we were “prepared beforehand for Glory.” And even precisely in John 17 to “Behold” His “Glory”. He is the author and creator and has seen fit to decree that if we do not “rejoice” in beholding the Glory of Christ then we are not worthy to be labeled with life.
  2. Now at this point I would like a give an example of what I just said and define a little more when I say life and existence.  First I will at times refer to spiritual death (i.e. exist. Being but not alive) as the following. [Then the creature’s life is vain and superficial.] Even though I used the word life, please don’t see it as life as you might understand it. The person is physically alive with a soul. But yet the most important part is dead. This person is spiritual dead and therefore can’t be alive to God. Which would therefore lead to us to say they don’t have life at all because they are not alive to the most important reality, infinite reality or better said God’s reality. Therefore it is better defined, they exist without real life. Now I will give an example of this. If a farmer finds one of his apple trees, which never produced an apple ever in its lifetime the farmer might rightly say, “it’s a tree but to me it is no apple tree, it is worthless to me.” A passer who has never seen this farm before might walk by and seeing the tree say, “Oh my, what is this ordinary worthless tree doing in among all these apple trees its wasting space.” Even though apple trees are good for some shade, or nesting for birds or providing away for carbon monoxide to be turned into oxygen it would not be worth calling it an “apple” tree if it does not produce apples. It would be missing is true existence for even being created.  Therefore it is cut down and thrown into the fire to be used as firewood.
  3.  This specifically applies to mankind because we were made to admire God with our minds and hearts(enjoy God).  Mankind was created in God’s image. Which means we are able to apprise and delight in what is truly beautiful or valuable.  Rabbits, Trees ants and dogs were not made in this way. I hope now we see that we may exist and not be being in a since that persons do not know and value and enjoy the greatest reality(God). The worth and treasure of Jesus Christ is to such a degree of Greatness that if one does not cherish it as Supreme then they do not live, but only exits apart from comprehending(mind) and enjoying(heart) all true Joy and beauty.  A person is neither worthy nor is it correct for them to be called a live, in the grandest since, if they love anything more in life other than God.
  4. 2 Thessalonians 1:9, “These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction (death), away from the presence of the Lord and from the Glory of His power.Revelation 21:8 "But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." What is this second death? And why do I say one may exist but yet not be alive.  In scripture we are told that we were all at least once emphatically called spiritual “dead” in Ephesians chapter 2 and in other places as well (Ezekiel 36:26-27, 37:13-14). When I say that one my exist but yet not be totally alive I am referring to this condition I just mentioned, “spiritual dead.”  Because “God is Spirit”, according to God in John chapter 4, we have no way of seeing, tasting, hearing, knowing, toughing, etc unless we are spiritually alive as He is. That is why there is a second death. When the sinner dies in his physical death on earth then he will be judged by God and sent to hell for eternity. But if he is already spiritually dead and then dies physically, then where does this second death come from. What is God communicating by this? While on earth you are surrounded by His beautiful creation, by His church, by His saints and even though there is much pain in the world there is still a great amount of God’s Goodness in it.  But in hell, like 2 Thessalonians says the punished will be utterly away from all that is God, all of what is good and beautiful in the most total absolute real since. Thus it will be called the second death. The existing one “now” still gets to feel some of the pleasures of the on going good of God around Him, but in hell that will all be but a distant dream. If some one is not spiritual alive so that they cannot see, taste, hear, enjoy God which is the definer and upholder of all that is known and unknown reality to us, then their so called life has become so vain and out of sync with what is real then they cant be credited with being called in the greatest since alive.
  5. Now Since God affirms His absolute perfect moral completeness and that He is infinitely beautifully, powerful, has absolute sovereignty, wisdom and knowledge then He must uphold Himself to be so.  And must defend the worth of His Name and Glory if something acts or communicates differently to His reality, which is the sum and fountain of all reality. Just as every spoke of a wheel turns to the same direction so does all reality turn to God and His desires.
  6. If one exist but is not being(life), then what does this mean? Its existence is now summed up as vain, superficial and meaningless. Now it is not meaningless in a since that it dose not relate to “The One Ultimate End.” For the sinner while dammed in Hell in their eternal punishment, will forever communicate that a vain life is such a dishonor to the Infinite worth of God that eternal punishment is required. Thus the worth of God’s glory is communicated even if life becomes vain.  Therefore showing that God is absolutely sovereign, righteous and just. Showing again He is the, One Original Supreme reality of all and has the power to prove it and will do just that. This is clear through History of God’s Holy power against people who dishonor His Name. And for the people that live life dishonoring to God’s Worth and reality, God says He will have the last word and take vengeance on all who practice such a vain existence.
  7. Which includes what is valuable and fact. Which means fact and value relate to one another because all things relate to God for the ultimate end which He made them. For His Glory. If the creature does not value the fact that the creator is in control and defines His being and all facts. Then the creature’s life is vain and superficial. And all hope for lasting happiness is lost for that creature. So whether the creature comes to the understanding of true fact and value or not, either way their existence will fulfill the desire the Creator made them for. For when condemned in hell the sinner(existing one) will by his eternal punishment, show to all of creation that fact and value relate to one another. That God is the all Glorious one to Whom all worth is credited to, so much that if someone does not realize this and live in such a way so as to show this truth, then eternal punishment will be required to vindicate and communicate God’s worth as so.  Thus again showing that fact and value and every other reality all have the same ultimate end, which is God, and for the communicating of the worth of God’s Glory. For this is the privilege an all-powerful God. Even though giving His creatures the ability to think and to admire, He stills defines and decrees into being all reality. For this is the reason God created in the first place. For it was the communicating of Him the infinite fountain of perfections.  And so working all things in what we know of created life, for His one purpose to Glorify and display the worth and beauty of His Name, we see and know He is the only absolute Supreme Great God. We see all things, fact and value relate to Him for Him.
  8.  Since we see in creation, earth, the stars and the heavens, etc… we have come to know that the creator is wise beautiful and all-powerful. We see that even unintelligent objects of mater were put into being for the displaying of the creators Worth.  Therefore it becomes clear He, who alone is wise, would know how best to fulfill the longings of His creatures that He made. Now scripture says the same thing. Psalm 16:11, “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”Now if knowing is “Christ” then what is being? What is being in the since that a human is doing more that existing but actually has Life, spiritual life, so as to be alive to God’s endless Glory. Being is for a person to live in Christ for Christ, by knowing Him and enjoy Him with all the mind, heart and soul, so that the absolute reality of His true and infinite value and Worth are clearly communicated. Especially communicating His mercy for us by enjoying living a life knowing one was pardoned from sin and its consequences. Then to have all joy to understanding one will have all eternity to know the inexhaustible pleasure of knowing and beholding the blinding light of Christ’s Glory.  “Flowing out from what He(God) is in Himself comes the purpose for our existence. God’s passion for His own Glory gives birth to ours. That is the single, all-embracing, all-transforming reason for being: a passion to enjoy and display God’s supremacy in all things for the joy of all peoples.  God created us to live with a single passion to joyfully display His Supreme Excellence…The wasted(vain) life is the life without this passion.”-(John piper - from his book, “Don’t waste your life”) Which brings us to the next question what is doing.
