Only 3 things would prevent a person from not grabbing hold of an abundant treasure, if it were told them the treasure was just a few feet down in the ground in front of them.
One is that they did not believe the report, and thus never went after it. Second they do not find treasure of gold and precious jewels beautiful, and would rather pursue other treasures, which to them are worth pursuing. Or third they believed the treasure was still too hard to obtain.
Christ is the greatest of all treasure, and is a treasure to all who would find Him admirable and worthy above all things (Matt. 13:44). Therefore look, see and know that Christ is such treasure and seek Him. Therefore be also like Moses who saw the true reality that “Christ” was “greater” compared to the “fleeting pleasures” of Egypt and of this world (Hebrews 11:24-25), therefore Moses found Christ as a treasure Who is worth seeking after, at all cost.
Don’t think that this treasure is to high to obtain, that you don’t have enough to buy such an infinitely great treasure. Notice the Treasure and Glory of Christ’s “Mercy” spoken about in Isaiah 55:6-7. This mercy is so Great that the prophet records God saying, “My thoughts are not your thoughts….for as heavens are higher then the earth, So are my ways higher than your ways.” This signifies the Glory and treasure of Gods Mercy is so high above us, that we are unable to even comprehend its worth, not alone buy it. But, this is the response we are instructed to give, by the writer, before such an infinitely grand treasure? (55:1) “Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no money, Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and without price.” Therefore let us come as we are, empty handed, to our benevolent Savoir knowing He offers us the treasure of His Mercy without price or with money. Let us run to Him putting away all distractions and hindrances for, “in [Christ) are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”(Colossians 2:3, Ephesians 3:8)
If we are not seeing Gods radiant glory, it is our faults for not looking at it, for God has reveled it in His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. It all depends on how much we are willing to let go of this world and our selfish wants in order to see more of the Beauty of our Great God. How much do you love Him? How much do you desire Him over the “fleeting pleasures(Hebrews 11:25)” of this world? Now I wish to exhort you from a quote by Jonathan Edwards.
“The wisdom of God has [obviously planned]that there should be all manner of attractiveness in the benefits that Christ offers you. There are not only the excellencies of the person of Christ to draw you to him, but the desirable benefits he offers. Here is what is most suitable to the cravings of the human nature. Men when distressed and burdened, long for ease and rest. Here it is offered to us in Christ. “Come unto me”, says he, “all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give your rest.” — Men when in fear of danger, long for safety. Here it is provided for us in Christ. God promises that he will become a shield and buckler, a strong rock and high tower to those that trust in him. — Those that mourn need comfort. Christ tells us that “he came to comfort those that mourn,” Isa. 61:2. — The blind need to have their eyes opened. The light is sweet to men. Christ offers to anoint our eyes with eye salve that we may see glorious light. He will be our sun, and the light of God’s countenance. — What is more dear to men than life? Christ has purchased for men, that they should live forever. Psa. 21:4, “He asked life of thee and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.” — How greatly is a crown prized and admired by the children of men! And Christ offers this — not a corruptible crown, but an incorruptible and far more glorious crown than any worn by earthly kings; a crown of glory, the luster of which shall never fade, nor decay; with an everlasting kingdom. — Do men love pleasures? Here are pleasures forevermore. What could there be more to draw our hearts to Jesus Christ, and to make us willing to accept of him for our Savior, with all his unspeakable benefits?” (J. Edwards, “The wisdom of God”)
Men crave Greatness (benefits) so they may find true satisfaction of soul. And the fact will always remain that God is the greatest Greatness in the universe. (Psalm 16:11) “You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” Therefore He shows us His Glory through Jesus Christ, by the means of His Blood being a propitiation for our sins. And His rising on the third day was proof of the Fathers public acceptance of this divine act. God demonstrates His love for us, in that He joined with us in our pursuit for satisfaction and therefore led us to the Cross of Jesus Christ where His Glory and Holiness are properly displayed for all to believe and enjoy. Which, it is here in Christ, the love of God shines the brightest as, we for all eternity, enjoy making much of the Father and Jesus Christ. Therefore “press on to know the Lord(Hosea 6:3)”, who is the “Fountain of Living Waters(Jeremiah 2:13)”, understanding, “once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy”, “that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light”(1 Peter 2:9:10).
If you have heard what has been said and long to know this God of Glory who has made His Fame known for all to behold, then I encourage all to forsake this life and know that there is mercy in Jesus to pardon the greatest of sinners. Psalm 25:11 “For Your name's sake, O LORD, Pardon my iniquity, for it is great.” If you feel truly aware of your guilt for despising the worth of Jesus Christ, realize God is ready to forgive. And so if you wish to come to Christ for the forgiveness of your sins then 2 things should be understood. Fist that:
(1.) “People who are not sensible of their guilt cannot truly look to God for mercy; for it is the very notion of divine mercy, that it is the goodness and grace of God to the guilty. [You] must be sensible that it is a very dreadful thing to be the object of the wrath of God; that it is a very awful thing to have him for [your] enemy; and that [you] cannot bear His wrath.
(2.) [You believe and trust] The mercy of God is as sufficient for the pardon of the greatest sins, because his mercy is infinite. That the satisfaction of Christ is as sufficient for the removal of the greatest guilt….[You] must come to God for mercy in and through Jesus Christ alone. All [your] hope of mercy must be from the consideration of what [Christ] is, what he hath done, and what he hath suffered; and that there is no other name given under heaven, among men, whereby we can be saved, but that of Christ; that he is the Son of God, and the Saviour of the world; that his blood cleanses from all sin, and that he is so worthy, that all sinners who are in him may well be pardoned and accepted.”
[Therefore understand] Christ having [suffered] for sin, God can now love the sinner, and give no [appearance] at all to sin, however great a sinner he may have been. God may, through Christ, pardon the greatest sinner without any prejudice to the honor of his majesty. The honor of the divine majesty indeed requires satisfaction; but the sufferings of Christ fully repair the injury. The sufferings of Christ fully satisfy justice.(Jonathan Edwards, “Pardon for the Greatest Sinners)”
What we need in light of this is a prayer of repentance. We need to repent for not pursuing to know and treasure Jesus Christ with all our hearts. And prayer for Gods divine help for a more willing and zealous heart and mind to pursue knowing the living God. Also we need to confess our desire to see Him better. A time for repenting, that in light of all the abundant display of Gods Glory in creation and especially in Gospel of Jesus Christ, we have spent far too much time wasting our minds and emotions treasuring other things more often than Jesus Christ. Or even now maybe some of you have been board with this discussion of the Fame of Jesus Christ and quite frankly would just rather go home and watch more TV. For many, especially in America they are so helplessly in love with the Banal and Trivial entertainments of this world they have lost the mental and emotional capacities for seeing and enjoying the infinite beauty of Jesus Christ.
Allow me to put this in a way that will make it clear of what is being said. Any thing you think, feel, do or enjoy more than Glory of Jesus Christ is Idolatry. God created the mind, which is able to think and understand complex thoughts and realities. God is also the creator and designer of the human heart. Therefore it is most natural to conclude that the mind and heart were above all things created to comprehend and enjoy the Glory and Fame of Jesus Christ. I ask you plainly, will you today honor God by using your mind, heart and hands in every thing you do for the Glory of Jesus Christ? Will you today give thanks to your God with the mediation of your mind, the desires of your hearts and work of your hands demonstrate to God that His is the greatest treasure in your life, or will the meditation of your heart and mind prove otherwise? For those who do not treasure Christ on earth by faith now will not treasure Him in Heaven by sight.
Gods grace be with you for all time through Jesus Christ! Amen
Your fellow laborer of Jesus Christ: Oshea
