2 Peter gives us another reason why we should not "willfully forget" God in every area of life. In 2 Peter 3:5 we learn why God sent the flood to destroy the earth along with every man, woman and child, because, "They deliberately forget that God made the heavens by the word of his command"(NLT). We also learn why they willfully forget, because they were, "following after their own lusts". And because they did these things God, except Noah and his family, utterly killed every human being on planet earth including women and small children.
These people lived a lot longer than we did today, by several hundred of years. Which means their intellect was most likely much greater than ours. But what did these gifted people do with their longs lives and higher intellect, they being carried off by their lust, "willfully forgot" God, the most important reality in all the Universe. These people knew there was a God, but due to their lust and choosing to forget God, soon pushed God so far out of reason that they "Mocked"(2 Pet 3:3) the idea of God.
Why is this important and how does this relate to our topic? It is important to Christians because we see how powerful the sin of pursuing of ones own lust is, which leads toward choosing to willful forget or remove God out of our life. This should cause us to be diligent not to have any area of our lives, which we are pursing the world's lust and therefore, causing us to forget about God. As the people who were destroyed in the Flood showed, if you are being too entertained, you will contain forgetful thoughts about God, to the point you become a mocker of God. And these people received their just end.
I am under much concern for this day and age because what I see people doing is what was being done by the people who were destroyed by God's Flood of water. I guess it is only fitting then to later reed in 2 Peter 3:6-7 that instead of destroying this age with a Flood of water God has "reserved" it for a flood of "fire." The former word was "dissolved" by water the other, "will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt".
What does this mean for the Christian? First, "look forward" to that day when God will purge the world with fire and the evil along with it. Secondly, be diligent to not pursue this world's lust and find yourself forgetting God. Like most things it might start of with one small thing but when sin is "full grown, it brings forth death." If that happens, then it will be clear to all you were never of the "house hold of God" in the first place, but only a thief trying to get in some other way.
Example: I see so-called Christians willfully forgetting and moving Jesus Christ out of lives in their politics and political convictions. For most, they are hopelessly in love with this world and would rather America be secular so that they can secretly, "walk according to their own lusts." Politics is one area where many Christians seem to enjoy playing the secret harlot, and would rather God not but-in and stop the fun. Many don't realize God demands us to show Zeal for His Name in every area of our lives, not every area minus politics or whatever the case might be.
They forget God's commands, yet, "By righteousness a nation is lifted up, but sin is a cause of shame to the people(BBE Proverbs 14:34)" and that, "The wicked will go down to the grave." This is the fate of all the nations who ignore God(NLT Psalm 9:17)". Also in Psalm 107 we read that God will turn "A fruitful land into barrenness(ver.34)", why? Because "the wickedness of those who dwell there." God then goes on to say, "whoever is wise will observe these things and will understand(Ver.43)."
Also they forget the words of Paul when he addressed the Greeks in Acts 17:24-30. "God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth... has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwelling "so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him." Here we are told that God put every Nation under the heavens in pre-appointed places so that men might find God. Therefore, no government or nation has the right to be secular, when God gave them their real-estate for the sole purpose that they might find Him!
And in Romans God says HE appointed Governments for the sole reason to "punish wrong doing." If a government says it punishes is citizens by any other name than in the Name of God the Father, then they blaspheme the Name of God. As if the goodness and wisdom of man deserves the credit for coming up with the successful idea of Government that is able to punish crime and make a prosperous society. God alone deserves that Credit and for a Government not to acknowledge this is to steal His honor that only belongs to Him.
The Almighty God, Jesus Christ, created the earth and all this resources. Every natural resource a country has belongs to God and God demands they publicly give Him created. God created all creation and created man to Glorify Him, not man to steal it. Whether men try to steal it by one person or as nation it does not matter.
For an example: think about King Nebuchadnezzar and His secular nation, whom God forced to acknowledge Him. God was the reason why this nation was successful and demanded they give Him His due credit. And thus is the same with every secular Nation under heaven. Daniel 4:30,"The king made answer and said, Is this not great Babylon, which I have made for the living-place of kings, by the strength of my power." Every Nation that credits is success to themselves and not to "living God", could suffer the same fate as King Nebuchadnezzar and that nation at any time. For in the fullness of time God will punish all nations for not seeking and giving Him His is due honor.
Therefore as Christians it is our desire at all cost to see a Government that honors their Creator and give Him His proper credit. Just as George Washington once famously said, "it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful of His benefits." Christians should desire that ultimate reality is acknowledge by their Government for the sake of God being Glorified, for the future sake of the Nation and their children. Why? God will judge Governments not by this world's values or definitions of reality but by His Standards, no exceptions. Therefore, every Nation who is wise would choose to Govern to the standards of God's definitions and requirements, not the collective worlds. Again look on the example of the Chaldeans and other secular Nations in the scriptures which God demanded their acknowledgement of Him. Which is why Christians desire all men to, "seek the lord, in hope that they might...find Him(Acts 17)." Therefore Christians desire Governments who acknowledge this and acknowledge God's will for mankind, knowing this will further help men to find and grope for the "living God."
