THE SALVATION OF SINNERS THE PROMISED REWARD FOR CHRIST'S SUFFERINGS

THE
SALVATION OF SINNERS THE PROMISED REWARD FOR CHRIST'S SUFFERINGS

Headnote
to Is. 53:10(a)

      In this sermon,
written and delivered in the period from Aug. 1731 to Dec. 1732, Edwards
identifies the words of Is. 53:10 as those of the Father pronouncing that
Christ's suffering will be successful, and that he shall give Christ the reward
of seeing his beloved church converted and brought to him.

      Edwards penned this
Christocentric sermon within the framework of the covenant of redemption,
focusing on one of the inward motivations for Christ's sufferings. Christ has
so set his love upon men, Edwards comments, that the seeing this sight [of
men saved] is what he earnestly desired and greatly delights in. He points to
Luke 22:29, I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father
hath appointed unto me, along with other verses, to show that Christ was
subject to God as mediator, a role for which he volunteered under the covenant
of redemption. Edwards also mentions this verse in...

God Decrees: (Updated) 2012

God Decrees: (Updated) 2012

In my book, The Divine Decrees, I have to confess that I did not distinguish—as well as I ought—the distinction between the historical and purpose order of the decrees. As a writer it is easy to make the mistake of assuming my audience sees categories that my mind’s eye does. Thus, I wish to come out this is modified version with the emphasis on this distinction

Defining the terms:
With the assumption that most who have interest in this biblical doctrine will know the terms supralapsarian and infralapsarian, and so I will move on. The lack of this distinction of purpose and historical has caused more than a small amount of confusion. Let us remedy this. In fact, the argument of supra. vs. infra. is more about incompleteness than out right error....

Reverse Engineering the Gospel for good Biblical Hermeneutics

I have written a book called, The Divine Decrees, and in this book I
dive into the showing that what God originally intended first, in His decrees,
is last in execution and what was the last comes first in order.

For
example take that of a business man.
When this now president of the company first began his journey in the
working world he did not start as president but at the bottom of the corporate
ladder. Although he started at the
bottom of the corporate ladder yet this was not his original goal or intention;
rather, being president was. See, what
he originally intended was accomplished last in order, while starting at the
bottom, which was intended after his goal of president was chosen, was
accomplished first in order. Ecclesiastes 7:8, “The end of a thing is better than its beginning.”

And
so God who is infinite in wisdom has His end goal as His original intention,
but starts out with something different, and continues to take a series of
steps until His original goal is accomplished. This...

Skepticism’s fingers around the church’s faith in Christ:

This essay will surround a conversation I recently had. I will indicate the 2nd (provision
has been taken to protect their identity—we will call them Johnny) party by
indentation. The theme surrounds God and
logic, and also logic and our created mind and paradoxes. In this age of skepticism and pluralism
running so rampant I find it is helpful to continue to write on this subject
matter for the sake of the churches pure faith in Christ.

The Freedom of a Hypocrite

       Sinners
feel free when they come out of the closet because by suppressing the truth of
God and His laws on their conscience they feel free from the guilt: this is the
freedom of the hypocrite. Now, the
freedom of a Christian is that of confessing one's vile sin of lying,
perversions and murder knowing Jesus died for the penalty of it, and whose
death purchased the holy Spirit to empower them to put to death sin: for those
who live according to the flesh will die, but those who by the power of the
Spirit put to death the deeds of the power will live: for as many as are led by
the Spirit of God are the sons of God.

My basic Scriptural Hermeneutics and preaching principles

I have been asked what are hermeneutics that I use when reading the Bible and for studying in preparing for teaching and writing; this essay is a response to that. The below is not an academic in-depth thesis of biblical hermeneutics, but only some of the more important practices I take with me when studying and teaching from the scriptures. On the basis that I use these so often they are habitually reflected in my writing, and so for some much of this will be review, but since I have been asked more than once to lay my basic hermeneutics so that others and see read them in one place I have decided to do this here. Over the coming year, Lord willing, I suppose this will be updated at various times.

When Infinite Existence Goes Public

. This book is number One from a 3 part series called, Learning to Trust
Infinite Beauty.

This series is my distinctive way of writing a focused
systematic theology book for the new or experienced Christian.

Within Systematic Theology we take the whole scripture and formulate
not only solid doctrinal premises but put them in an order that is
conducive for teaching and instructing others. This is why with
systematic theology we (1) start with the big questions about God
Himself first, then (2) we ask what God has done, particularly in
salvation, and (3) then we end with how we should order our lives in
light of such truths.

This first book ( When Infinite Existence Goes Public ) we will learn the about God Himself or of His Divine
Nature and how this leads us to trust Him. Herein we discover that...

Consistently applying God's Sovereignty

Recently
I have been reminded how much even Calvinist do not consistently understand nor
apply God's sovereignty to their understanding of the scriptures and of life. I say this as a rebuke and also as a father
who is patient with his sons trying to grasp multiplication for 2st grade. The concept might seem a little difficult
now, but once internalized by the mind it can be applied at a moment notice.

Not too long ago, I had a conversation
with a Calvinist who told me that God has had nothing but love for the elect
and hate for the reprobate since before time began and forever more. This is a Calvinist or Reformed in theology
Christian who thinks they are at the top of their Calvinistic game of knowing
God's sovereignty, but in reality the accurate applying of God's sovereignty is
the one...

Jonah, Samson: Heroes of Gospel Faith

Does
this title seem a little strange? It might to some who are accustomed to affiliating
bad morals to Samson as the man who was seduced by Delilah, and Jonah as the
prophet who was so angry with God he ran from God. Yet, in the eyes of Scripture, or in God's
eyes that is, these are heroes of godliness[*] who need to be emulated by us
today. And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to
tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: who through faith subdued
kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of
lions...of whom the world was not worthy... And all these, having obtained a good
testimony through faith, did not receive the promise. God having provided something better for us,
that they should not be made perfect apart from us. Therefore we also, since we
are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight,
and the sin which so easily...

Bullied By Skepticism

I would warn my readers that in this age
of the internet agnosticism and skepticism have exploded. Some foolishly thought
with more information that the internet brought that more wisdom and understanding
would come, but the opposite effect has occurred.

You need to be educated on this, for the
increase of skepticism will find you; it will find your families, and church
members and will increase more and more.
You cannot shield them from it; the attacks will come constantly and
hard. Like pornography, it's not a
matter if, but when your child and church members will be exposed to it. Better to deal with the issue now.

Now, take note that Jesus in fact charges us in
John chapter 4 that the Father seeks
for people to worship Him in truth
and not worship Him in an estimate.

Take for example of a recent moron trying to...

How the liberal Emergence Church self-refutes itself

I recently had a person who sparked my interest yet again in the

nonsense of the liberal part of the Emergent church movement.
People like Brian Mclaren, Greg Boyd and Rob Bell talk about Christianity as if
it is an open conversation of Christians trying to press in and find the truth.
They say we only have ideas and approximations to what the original writers of
the Scripture meant to say.

At this point people will try,
understandably, to quote scripture to show how this is not true, but I
personally like to show how this position is self-refuting and so it is not
necessarily needed to go to the scriptures. A position that self-refutes
itself is false, and so as a worldview it does not exist, and so it stands as
no threat in anyway to the Biblical Worldview. It is easy for most to see
this position and point out that it invalidates the Biblical doctrine of the
infallibility of the scripture by making it unintelligible or skeptical, but
the...

Monotheistic New-Birth & Man's Salvation

Basic Definition of Monotheistic Regeneration:

In the broadest sense I mean by this
that the work of God in the salvation of man is (BY) His mighty working, and
this without any contribution of man. Man being affected by God's working does
do and will. See, God acts upon man, gives to man, imparts to
man with mighty mercy and divine power in the work of salvation. Man in the role of salvation only receives
gifts from God and is acted upon by
God in power. The reason I have highlighted
the word by is to demonstrate this: Salvation is by God because it is through His power and working with no thanks
to man who is saved by God. For example,
it is irrational to say the universe came into being (by) chance so so
years ago, because chance does not exist
nor does it have power therefore, it cannot affect metaphysical reality in any
way. The universe came...

New Sermons by Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards

Portrait of Rev. Jonathan Edwards, c. 1750,

by Joseph Badger. Courtesy Yale University Art Gallery.

This section will be hosting sermons that I have helped to transcribe and edit @ the Jonathan Edwards Center at Yale University (http://edwards.yale.edu/).

Through my partnership with the Edwards Center I have a goal to work on unpublished sermons that particularly deal with Edwards' Christology. My hope, lord willing, when I have completed enough sermons is to put them into a book and forward it discussing Edwards' Christology.

I will have two versions of each sermon. One is the original version as hosted by the Edwards Center. Then I will also have a slightly copy-edited version. This edited version will be edited minimally, but I will modernize the more difficult parts so that today's readers who have a difficult time...

How False Prophets Lie (Abiding in Christ)

        I have enjoyed
the recent controversy over Rob Bell in recent days, for it gives me a chance
to not only defend the faith but after defending it to articulate its beauty
and endless streams of glory that flow from the fountain of knowledge
concerning Christ crucified for many evil sinners. Also, I find it rather
therapeutic to call out false prophets, and so I shall continue.

Recently
a pastor friend of mine said he remembers listening to a Rob sermon where he
preached about Christ being a substitutionary mediator, and how it seems tragic
that this same man has now rejected the biblical teaching of hell and so also
his former position of substitutionary dearth.
For if eternal Hell is denied then there is no need for Jesus to be a propitiation
and so the Biblical doctrine of substitution is invalidated.
